ROUTES
Of
the lake routes in Kuhmo, the about 70 km long
Tar Route
starts from the north at lake Änättijärvi and
continues through the lake chain Lentiira-Iivantiira-Lentua and lake
Lammasjärvi toward the centre of Kuhmo.
The Vieksinjoki river route
starts from the north-west corner of Kuhmo and continues south
towards lake Ontojärvi mainly through narrow lakes.
Both lake routes extend to the west towards Kajaani or even to Oulu
by the Oulujoki river.
The
Jongunjoki river route
starts from south-east Kuhmo. This wilderness route is the most
popular river route and has also the best service facilities. The
route is navigable from Teljo downwards throughout the summer. The
Kalliojoki river route
starts from north-east Kuhmo from the hiking area of Iso-Palonen as
a string of pearl-shaped little ponds and continues through a river
dotted by small lakes to Lentua and from there on to Kuhmo. The
Kiekinjoki river route
is
navigable throughout the summer from Kivi-Kiekki, where the river
starts as a small brook. Starting from Kiekinkoski rapid, the river
unfolds several rapids within a short distance that provide
excitement even to kayakers at high water.
