DAY PADDLE ON THE JONGUNJOKI RIVER

This one day paddle trip takes place in the southeast corner of Kuhmo, near the Russian border along the easy Jongunjoki canoeing route. The river is a natural wilderness river with no permanent habitation or summer cottages along its banks. The paddle trip will be made in tandem canadian canoes at a leisurely pace, which makes it suitable for beginners as well as children (over 7 years). The tour begins at Raatelampi, where your guide will teach the basics about paddle techniques and how to steer your canoe as well as review the safety issues. The route takes you through several easy but exiting mini-rapids. The most difficult and only class II rapid, Aittokoski, is at the end of the route. This rapid will first be scouted from dry land and shooting it will be optional. The less courageous can also end their trip above the rapid. The distance between Raatelampi and Aittokoski is about 13 km. You will also stop at the old Otrokoski logging cabin on the route where you can taste coffee made over the open fire and have a bite to eat.
